Can an SIA owner do bookkeeping themselves? The safe line between control and risk

When an SIA owner may handle bookkeeping themselves, what responsibility remains, and how to build a safe self-service process.

Many small SIA owners ask a very practical question: do I really need an outsourced accountant every month if the number of transactions is small and the business model is simple? The answer is not black and white. In certain situations, the company manager may keep the accounting themselves, for example when they are the only board member and the only shareholder of the company.

However, the right to do bookkeeping yourself does not reduce responsibility. The Accounting Law places responsibility on the company manager for proper accounting and preservation of accounting documents. Even if software automates part of the routine, the owner must still ensure that data is traceable, documents are stored, and reports can be prepared.

The safe boundary starts with business complexity. If the company provides simple services, has a small number of documents, no complex international transactions, and the owner updates data regularly, a self-service model can work very well. If complex VAT, imports, exports, several shareholders, employees, or unusual transactions appear, professional accounting support becomes much more important.

The biggest mistake is thinking that "I do it myself" means "I do it whenever I have time". Bookkeeping is not a year-end event. Invoices, receipts, bank transactions, and tax deadlines need regular attention. If documents sit for months in email and chat messages, the owner loses control even when the number of transactions is small.

A safe practical routine can be simple: once a week, review the bank account, upload missing documents, connect payments to invoices, check upcoming tax dates, and confirm that expenses are supported. This kind of discipline creates much more confidence than trying to reconstruct the year from memory.

SelfSIA is built for this founder-first approach: the owner keeps control of the company without being forced to manage everything through Excel, folders, and guesses. The platform helps organize documents, bank transactions, categories, and reminders, so self-managed bookkeeping becomes a structured process rather than a risk.
